"Bring it On" (cont.)

bush braggin'Even when George W. Bush leaves the office of US President, he is likely to be the most expensive ex-president the US has ever had.

Congress recently approved 16.5 million dollars to begin training Secret Service agents to protect Mr. Bush when he leaves office.

"He is the only president that invaded a country without provocation and without it being started by the other side. I think he has gained a lot of enmity. ... There are a lot of people who resent this president, both externally and internally, some of whom have lost sons and daughters and had people injured in the war in Iraq."

Chuck Vance, former Secret Service agent and former son-in-law of ex-President Gerald Ford.

Christmas mourning (funk-no-more)

He’s gone.

The mighty, Mr.James Brown has died.
Star time
The Godfather of Soul (and funk, and rap, and hip-hop, . . . and rock-n-roll) passed on in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia this morning.

As a tiny tribute to the hardest working man in show business, the staff of KIW’s music department decided to come to work this Christmas morning to make sure that the world gets to hear this 1973 James Brown gem titled “You Can Have Watergate (Just Gimme Some Bucks and I’ll be Straight).”

The band on this recording (an iteration of James Brown’s band, The ‘JBs) includes Mr. Bootsy Collins on bass.

Ahmet Ertegun

Ahmet
Ahmed Ertegun was the teenage son of the Turkish ambassador to the United States in the mid-1930s when he fell in love with American jazz.

He befriended the mostly black musicians who frequented the music clubs in Washington DC and eventually started his own record label.

Atlantic Records grew into a billion dollar industry while bringing the music of American blacks to the world.

Ertegun, at age 83, fell and hit his head at a Rolling Stones concert in Manhattan on October 29, 2006. He died of that injury seven weeks later.

Big Brother's little helper

A writer named Kevin Haggerty makes a convincing (and unsettling) case that, before long, we’ll all be implanted with microchips.
